Medical Billing and Coding is a high-demand occupation in today's economy. HoHoKus School-RETS/Nutley''s Medical Billing and Coding program will prepare students for entry-level positions as Coders, Medical Office Managers, Medical Secretaries, Medical Receptionists, or Medical Transcriptionists. Other opportunities exist in the hospital setting as entry-level clerks and abstractors in a Medical Records department.
Students will learn administrative skills, coding skills and medical billing rules and regulations used in today’s medical professions. Emphasis is placed on Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Terminology to increase proficiency in the Billing and Coding fields. Patient relations, privacy issues and professional standards for workers in the healthcare industry are also stressed. In order to keep pace with the regulatory changes occurring in this medical field, students will develop skills in documentation and compliance. Students will also develop proficiency with administrative tasks including operating Microsoft Windows computer software, patient billing, scheduling, record keeping, medical transcription, and completing insurance forms and coding. Students will use equipment including personal computers with medical software and color displays, transcription machines, skeleton, and current ICD, CPT and HCPCS manuals.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded a certificate from HoHoKus School-RETS/Nutley, and will have the opportunity to obtain Insurance Billing and Coding Specialist certification through NCCT. A large portion of courses are transferable to HoHoKus Hackensack School, Hackensack, New Jersey, if a student wishes to pursue further studies in compliance management. In addition, most courses within the program have been evaluated by the American Council on Education?s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE/CCRS) which has determined that the courses are equivalent to or similar to those taught at college level, awarding up to 12 credits for completion of the course.
