Medical Assisting is one of the fastest-growing occupations in today's economy. HoHoKus School-RETS/Nutley's Medical Assistant program will prepare students for entry-level positions as Medical Assistants, Medical Office Managers, Medical Secretaries, Medical Receptionists, or Medical Transcriptionists. Other opportunities exist in the hospital setting as Patient Care Technicians, EKG Technicians, Phlebotomists, Unit Secretaries and Ward Clerks.
Students will learn both the back-office clinical and front office administrative skills that today"s medical profession demands. Emphasis is placed on both patient relations and professional standards for workers in the healthcare industry. In an effort to keep pace with the technological changes occurring in the medical field, skilled Instructors use up-to-date training methods and equipment. Students will develop clinical skills including checking vital signs, venipuncture, charting, EKGs, blood testing, injections, urinalysis, hospital care, CPR and First Aid.
Students will also develop proficiency with administrative tasks including operating Microsoft Windows computer software, patient billing, scheduling, record keeping, medical transcription, completing insurance forms and coding. Major equipment students will use in the program includes the Autoclave, Blood Pressure Machine (Sphygmomanometer), Catheter/Ostomy training mannequin, Clinitek 50 Urine Chemistry Analyzer, EKG Machine, Glucometer, Hemocue Machine, Ishihara Charts, Reflotron, Skeleton, Stethoscopes, Thermoscan, and Sure Tem Plus.
A large portion of courses are transferable to HoHoKus School in Ramsey, New Jersey, if a student wishes to pursue further studies in sonography or licensed practical nursing. Transfer is also available for licensed practical nursing at the HoHoKus Hackensack School in Hackensack, New Jersey. In addition, most courses within the program have been evaluated by the American Council on Education's College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE/CCRS) which has determined that the courses are equivalent to or similar to those taught at college level, awarding up to 17 credits for completion of the course.
Students will develop Clinical skills such as vital signs, venipuncture, charting, EKG, blood testing, injections, urinalysis, hospital care, CPR, and First Aid. Administrative skills students will gain include computer proficiency with Microsoft Windows software, patient billing, scheduling and record keeping, medical transcription, keyboarding speed and accuracy, insurance forms and coding.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded a certificate from HoHoKus Rets, and will have obtained CPR, First Aid, and OSHA certifications. In addition, completion of this program allows graduates to gain Electrocardiography (EKG) and Phlebotomy certifications and sit for the R.M.A. exam to become Registered Medical Assistants.
